Love & Learning: A STEAM-Infused Valentine's Day in the Classroom

Valentine’s Day in the classroom can be a mix of excitement, creativity, and, let’s be honest, a bit of chaos! Whether it’s students eager to exchange cute love letters or the inevitable sugar rush from Valentine’s chocolates, holding the attention of your students is key. We, at Kai’s Education, know that some students can just zip and zoom around, especially on days that might differ from usual school days.

So, instead of only focusing on the traditional elements of Valentine’s Day, why not turn it into a powerful learning opportunity? By incorporating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) into the day’s activities, educators can harness student enthusiasm while promoting critical thinking and creativity. In this blogpost guide, we’ll explore ways to manage the holiday, provide engaging STEAM activities, and offer helpful tips for teachers to make the most of Valentine’s Day in the classroom.

Plus, if you’re looking for more hands-on inspiration, join us for our Valentine’s Day Webinar, where we’ll showcase interactive activities using Kai’s Clan and KaiBot! Follow the link here or at the end of the blogpost to register.

Managing Valentine’s Day in the Classroom

1. Set Clear Expectations

With all the excitement surrounding Valentine’s Day, it’s important to set clear guidelines for students. Here are some ways to maintain order while still embracing the fun:

  • Establish rules for card exchanges to ensure inclusivity and kindness.
  • Set designated times for Valentine’s activities to keep the day structured and to keep students from going off-track.
  • Encourage students to focus on the meaning of Valentine’s Day—kindness, friendship, and appreciation—rather than just gifts and candy. Encourage them to remind their friends and family that they’re loved.

2. Inclusive Celebrations

Not every student may celebrate Valentine’s Day at home, so it’s important to make classroom activities welcoming to all. Here’s how:

  • Use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to discuss friendship, teamwork, and empathy.
  • Offer activities that don’t require purchasing gifts or cards (Some extra ideas we’ve included that you can use your own KaiBot to engage in your classroom, are shared below!)
  • Create a collaborative classroom project, such as a kindness wall where students write positive messages for classmates. Use sticky notes and let them get creative with drawings or writing messages.

3. Use Valentine’s Day as a Learning Opportunity

Rather than viewing Valentine’s Day as a distraction to the usual school day, turn it into a valuable educational experience. Connecting the holiday to STEAM activities can engage students while reinforcing key skills.

Kai’s Education Valentine’s Day Activities

At Kai’s Education, we believe that learning should be interactive, hands-on, and fun! Utilize Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics to participate in some fun, lovey-dovey Valentines activities! Here are some exciting ways to integrate our robotics and coding tools into your Valentine’s Day classroom celebrations:

Coding Cupid’s Path – Program the bot to follow a heart-shaped path.

    • Set up KaiTiles to create a heart-shaped track.
    • Using the KaiBot coding cards, have students program the bot to move around the outside of the heart.
    • For older students, you can encourage them to make use of the function or loop cards, in order to create more complicated sequences..
    • Challenge: Add obstacles or things to collect (like “Avoid Cupid’s arrows” or “Collecting Love Hearts”) to navigate around!

Love Letter Delivery Bot – Code the bot to deliver Valentine’s Day messages.

    • Place Valentine’s messages or small paper “mailboxes” around the classroom.
    • Students code their bot to deliver messages to different locations.
    • For younger students, use directional coding cards (move forward, turn left, turn right) to navigate KaiBot from one location to another.
    • Older students can incorporate more complex coding cards, or use Block.ly and app.kaisclan.com to deliver their messages, if they want a challenge.

Share The Love: Gamification & 3D Design – Using Minecraft or similar platforms, students can build and export a 3D heart.

    • Guide students to create symmetrical 3D heart designs using block-based building tools.
    • Teach basic 3D modeling concepts and explore how to export the design for 3D printing or digital sharing.
    • Encourage collaboration by having students combine their designs into a virtual Valentine’s display.

Surprise Kai’s Clan Gift Card – Design and color a special Valentine’s gift. Find here!

    • Have students color and decorate the Kai’s Clan printable gift card.
    • They will cut along the outside of the printable to create a card they can glue onto a piece of cardstock or paper for a unique Valentine’s gift.
    • Make sure your Kai’s Clan robot is colored in a way that’s special to you or someone you care about. Of course, feel free to give the card to someone special for Valentine’s Day!
    • Feel free to check out the inspiration behind the card here! Credit to them for the idea!

Heart Race – Race your KaiBot around a heart-patterned track.

    • Organize your KaiTiles into a heart-shaped pattern following the guide.
    • Time yourself against classmates or friends to see who can code their KaiBot to complete the heart-shaped path the fastest.
    • Watch your races in the virtual world using Kainundrum, and race against your friends in multiplayer if you want that extra competition!
    • Additionally; We’ll be featuring the Heart Race as a lesson plan for our Valentine’s Day Themed Webinar, which you can register for here!

Random Acts of Kindness – Spread love and kindness throughout the day!

    • Complete ten random acts of kindness, and for each one, color in a heart on your worksheet.
    • Once all ten hearts are colored in, celebrate by getting your KaiBot to perform a fun dance to show your appreciation and kindness!
    • Try to encourage students to not only assist classmates and friends, but also to help someone new. Whether it’s something small, or bigger, make sure they understand the importance of treating others with kindness.

Tips for Teachers: Surviving Valentine’s Day & Making it Fun

While Valentine’s Day can be exciting, it can also be overwhelming for many students, not just the teacher. Keeping some things in mind as you navigate throughout the day can always keep it fresh and easy to organize. Here are some tips to keep things running smoothly and make the day even more fun:

1. Sugar Control Strategies

  • Set a rule for when students can enjoy treats (e.g., after lunch).
  • Encourage healthier snack alternatives alongside sweets. Many fruits have a natural sweetness to them, which is a healthy alternative.
  • Use extra energy for movement-based learning activities to avoid restlessness, such as different types of tag or movement games.

2. Mindful Activities

  • Have students reflect on friendship and kindness through journaling or split off into group discussions.
  • Offer calming Valentine’s-themed coloring pages or relaxation exercises in case there are students who need some time to collect themselves from the excitement.
  • Make sure your classroom knows a signal when to begin to quiet down, such as clapping, raising your hand, or a phrase. Maybe come up with a special, Valentine’s Day-themed call specifically for the day!

3. Classroom Organization Hacks

  • Use labeled paper/plastic bags or envelopes for organized Valentine exchanges. Organizing something like a “Post Office” in your classroom, and having students drop off their letters in the morning, can help keep things organized. After lunch, cards can be handed out.
  • Have students help clean up at the end of the day to reset the classroom. Putting chairs up, packing away rubbish, and tidying up helps maintain a calm environment for the day’s end.
